Get Behind The Wheel

GDL Drivers is a driving school based in Wexford offering driving lessons from complete beginner to test preparation.
Learner drivers who obtained their first Learner Permit after 4/4/11 must complete Essential Driver Training – a course of 12 x 1 hour driving lessons designed by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). This EDT course must be delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). Lessons are structured to help learners grasp basic skills and behaviours, laying the foundation for safe driving for years ahead.

    Theory Test

Before any lessons can begin, the Learner must study for and pass the (Driver Theory Test. Then, you must apply in person to the NDLS for a Learner Permit for Category B cars Wexford town has both a Theory Test centre and NDLS Office. Lessons can start when you receive your Learner Permit.

    About EDT

Each EDT driving lesson has a specific aim such as: technical checks, basic car controls, position on road, control of speed and gears, observation and mirrors, and developing the responsible attitude that drivers need to deal safely with hazards on road. Learner drivers will also need many more hours of practice and test preparation lessons before achieving Driving Test pass standard.

    Log Book

A log book recording the lesson content is completed, signed and stamped by the ADI. The instructor must also upload completed lessons to the RSA – only when all 12 lessons are done and Learner Permit held at least 6 months can the Learner apply for the Driving Test. More info on EDT here.

    The Car

Many Learners prefer to start in the GDL Drivers dual control car. When skills improve, you can practice and take lessons in your own car. Your vehicle must  be insured, taxed (Motor Tax Online), have valid NCT certificate (NCTS), display L plates and be roadworthy. Ideally, EDT is completed over 6 months with standard driving lessons and/or regular driving practice between EDT lessons.

    Upskill

Practice can be with your ADI or with a Sponsor – a driver (a full license holder for at least 2 years) who can accompany you in your own car. As this is a responsible role, GDL Drivers offers extra information and support for Sponsors, including an “Upskill your driving” lesson to increase confidence.

    Training Videos From The RSA

Video 1: Getting ready for your driving test

This video is aimed at learner drivers and outlines the steps involved in getting ready for your driving test. It covers studying for and passing your driver theory test, getting your learner permit, Essential Driver Training (EDT) and ultimately, booking your driving test. The video also outlines the many resources that are available to help learner drivers as they learn to drive as well as the requirements they must adhere to, for example, displaying L plates on their car and having valid NCT, tax and insurance.

Video 2: On the day of your test

The second video in this series outlines what to expect on the day of your test before you take the actual test itself. It demonstrates the preparation required before your test, what happens when you arrive at the test centre, and the pre-test verbal exam that will be conducted by your driver tester before the practical part of the test. The video will also highlight other important considerations, for example, the learner driver must be accompanied to the test centre by a fully licensed driver, the documents that must be signed before the test, as well as a general overview of how the practical test will be conducted, including the pre-test technical and in-car checks.

Video 3: During your driving test

Video 3 covers what will happen during the driving test itself. It shows a candidate undergoing her driving test with a Driver Tester, demonstrating the technical checks that are conducted beforehand, the in-car checks, the manoeuvres that you are required to perform during the test as well as the many other elements that you will be tested on when out on the open road. The video will also cover what happens after the driving test, if a candidate passes or fails, and what the candidate should do next in both situations.

Video 4: Essential Driver Training (EDT)

In this video, the Essential Driver Training programme, known as EDT, is covered in more detail. The ultimate aim of EDT is to keep young drivers safe on Irish roads by working with them to become competent, confident and skilled drivers. The video will outline the different components of EDT, including the role of the ADI and how to find one, as well as how to choose a Sponsor, the person chosen by you to support you as you learn to drive. The video also shows what happens in your first EDT lesson as well as the preparation required beforehand. It will outline the purpose of the logbook and how it is used, what each of the 12 lessons will cover and how the learner driver uses self analysis to identify what needs to be practised with their Sponsor between lessons.
