The June Bank Holiday weekend is almost upon us and this always means increase in traffic volumes. Wexford is a popular tourist area and being close to Rosslare Europort means visitors from other parts of Ireland, UK, France and further afield. Registration plates can help drivers identify possible non-local traffic. Visitors may be unfamiliar with road layouts, looking for direction signs or just the scenery! Campervans, caravans and motorcyclists are more likely too. Give them all time, space and courtesy - safe driving to everyone this holiday weekend!
25/5/17 - Driver Theory Test
Thinking of learning to drive? Before you take a driving lesson, you must first pass the Driver Theory Test. Do you have the required ID? From 1/6/17, you must have a Public Services Card to book and sit your Theory Test. this can be obtained by contacting your local Dept of Social Protection. Get the 7th Edition Theory Test book or CD Rom or online app which contain all the up to date questions. You must get 35/40 questions correct - however, there are a possible 1000 multiple choice questions, so not so easy unless you study! Gillian Dunlop, driving instructor, can help you if you have any difficulties with the Theory Test.
Book your test online (€45) and remember to bring ID - Wexford DTT centre is on Paul Quay, near TK Maxx (see map)
17/12/16 Love to ride a motorcycle? Remember you must undertake the formalities of passing the Category A Theory Test and obtaining either Cat AM, A1, A2 or A Learner Permit before you can start motorcycle lessons. Please resist the temptation to rush out and buy a bike! Apart from the risk of buying a defective or dangerous machine, you will probably not be able to insure it until you have completed IBT (Initial Basic Training). You also cannot ride your own bike legally unaccompanied until IBT is finished anyway. If you are hoping to practice and then do your motorcycle test on your own bike, check that it complies with the RSA list of Representative Vehicles for the Driving Test . GDL Drivers has school bikes for hire for IBT and testing and of course, will give you advice on which type of motorbike will suit you.
12/2/15 Here are a few interesting statistics taken from the RSA website - The waiting time for driving tests in Wexford is 11 weeks - the shortest waiting time is 7 weeks in Newcastle West. Of course, if you really want a test sooner, you can ring to request a cancellation. The most recent Pass Rates are for 2013 - the national average was 55.27% with Wexford's rate 50.76%. The highest pass rate was in Tuam at 69.13% and the lowest in Rathgar, Dublin at 41.87% - that is nearly a 28% difference! We do not have a breakdown on stats for first, second or subsequent atttempts but we can assume that first timers will have a lower pass rate.
5/2/15 The first of February may be the first official day of Spring, but the weather is more wintery than ever! Vehicles can be very iced up in the mornings so make time to thoroughly and completley clear windscreens, windows and mirrors before driving - no "portholes" please! At least the days are getting longer - lovely clear skies and sunshine - watch out for low winter sun which can be blinding. Polarised sunglasses and keeping windscreens smearfree will reduce glare.
20/9/14 Autumn is upon us again and leaves are starting to fall....... when the rain comes, they will become slippery so take care when braking to avois skidding. Brake progressively and keep both hands firmly on wheel.
15/9/13 Remember - you must carry a valid Learner Permit at all times when taking driiving lessons or practising with your Sponsor. Check that your Learner Permit is still in date.....espeicially if you have applied for your Driving Test recently. Renewals by the National Driver Licensing Service can take up to 3 weeks! Application forms are downloadable from www.rsa.ie and are still submitted to local Motor Tax Office until end of October.
